About

National Bank of Pakistan is the country's largest public sector commercial bank, established in 1949 as an emergency measure after the newly independent state lost access to the banking infrastructure of pre-partition India. For much of its early history it acted as an agent of the State Bank of Pakistan in places the central bank had no presence, and it still carries out government treasury functions alongside ordinary commercial banking. It is majority-owned by the Government of Pakistan and listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

In context

We hold 8 other bank companies founded in the 1940s. None has a closure on record yet.

Counted across this directory, from founding and closing years in public records. Medians cover only companies whose closure is recorded; a company with no closure date may have quietly ceased without the record catching it.
