About
Habib Bank Limited was founded in Bombay in 1941 by the Habib family and moved to Karachi at Partition, making it the first commercial bank established by Muslims in the subcontinent and the oldest bank in Pakistan. It was nationalised in 1974 and privatised in 2004, when the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development acquired a controlling stake. HBL is designated a domestic systemically important bank by the State Bank of Pakistan and has the largest branch network in the country, with operations across the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe.
In context
We hold 8 other bank companies founded in the 1940s. None has a closure on record yet.
Counted across this directory, from founding and closing years in public records. Medians cover only companies whose closure is recorded; a company with no closure date may have quietly ceased without the record catching it.
